Traffic Circus : Manipur Style - Masjid Road : Footpaths turned into makeshift shops
Source: The Sangai Express
Imphal, September 29 2016:
Masjid Road of Paona Keithel no longer serves as a public road.
It is about 0.5 Km long and it has the width of two lanes.
Moreover there are footpaths on either side of the road.
There are around 200 shops along the road from Cine Still photo studio till the northern end.
With their merchandises spread across the footpaths, these shops have completely occupied the footpaths.
As such, the footpaths are not accessible to commuters and the public.

Apart from occupying the footpaths, a large number of light vehicles used by many of these shops for ferrying goods are parked just below the footpaths and these parked vehicles occupy almost half the breadth of the road.
A large number of cars and two-wheelers belonging to shopkeepers and salesmen are also parked together with the goods carriers.
As a result, half the breadth of the 0.5 Km long road and its adjoining footpaths are not accessible to commuters and the public.
Majority of the people who run shops along Masjid Road are non-local people.
Vacant portions of the footpaths, not occupied by adjoining shops, are occupied by betel leaf sellers.
Large baskets of betel leaves can be seen on the footpaths.
One betel-leaf dealer said that they were told to occupy the footpaths and they use to pay Rs 100 or Rs 150 and sometimes Rs 50 to let them do their daily business on the footpaths.
More than 100 betel leaf sellers have been occupying the footpaths of Masjid Road starting from Shamu Makhong junction.
One-way norm is applied on Paona Keithel road and there is restriction on movement of vehicles from South to North along the road.
But no such norm is applied on Masjid Road where half of its breadth is occupied by parked vehicles thereby creating serious difficulties to commuters and the general public.
