Speaking as Chief Guest of the inaugural function, PK Jha, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Senapati highlighted issues centering around environmental crisis and its resultant climate change.
He pointed out that depletion of forest resources has an adverse effect on water resources which in turn affect the people, more particularly, the womenfolk as they have to go far to fetch water.
Though we all need timber and forest products we must be resilient, he observed, while appealing to all to take a pledge to plant a tree on their birthdays and anniversaries.
Such initiatives would result in 75000 to 1 Lakh saplings being planted in a year, he added.
Kh Ibohal, DFO of Senapati, who attended the function as Guest of Honour, noted that forest and trees play important role in preservation of environment.
Planting of trees is necessary for a healthy environment while cutting of trees affects the environment as well as other species and deforestation causes global warming and soil erosion.
He also announced that the Forest Department would be distributing saplings among the NGOs, societies, communities, etc for more plantations of trees.
President of SDWA Lolia, President of Maram Women Union P Kina Lucy and President of SDSA LR John were also among the special invitees who attended and spoke at the function during which the Chief Guest released the 'Go-Green Mission' memento.
The mementos were also distributed among the participants and media persons.
Students of Mt.
Carmel Academy and Saklim Christian English School presented entertainment programs during the function.
Symbolic kick-off plantation was led by the Chief Guest along with distribution of saplings among the students.
The Go-Green Mission is a part of MKS campaign on tree plantation to combat climate change.
For this year, MKS will plant about 4000 saplings in different places of the district under the mission.
MKS said it believes the concern for environment and forests does not ended with the responsibility of the concern Department alone, rather, it stresses the vital role on how one's action in a corner of the world affects those in another corner and ensure the participation at every level, every individual, family, the community, organizations, businesses, departments, etc as combating climate change goes beyond the ability of one entity.
