'Breaking the Silence' campaign in three hill dists begins today

'Breaking the Silence' a global campaign aimed to end myths, taboos and stigma around menstruation and bring awareness on menstrual hygiene management is beginning its 2018 Manipur Campaign from tomorrow till May 30 in three hill districts of Noney, Tamenglong and Ukhrul.
In order to ensure successful implementation of the campaign, a team will be on a road trip from tomorrow from Imphal and they will head for Noney first to be followed by Tamenglong and Ukhrul.
The venue for Noney district mass awareness programme on 'Menstrual Hygiene Management' is Tengkongjang Higher Secondary School at Noney (Longmai) Part-3 on May lOat 10am whilethe venue for Tamenglong district is Duiluan (Wairangba), Part-1 on May 13 at 9 am.
On other days, house to house visits and interaction with village authority and community are planned.
Founder of the social initiative, Urmila Chanam said, "Manipur and most North East States have not been a part of major studies on menstrual hygiene and therefore, it becomse all the more important for us to find what the situation is in terms of hygiene, health, availability, accessibility and use of sanitary products, and disposal of menstrual waste.
Also, menstrual hygiene should be taken up on mission mode like Swachh Bharat Mission otherwise the needs of 355 million menstruating girls and women will live without facility and support for their menstruation." The programme is organised in partnership with the community of the districts and will train adolescent girls and women, teachers and non-teaching staff, representatives of the church and social organisations.
The team will meet district Government officials to discuss what can be done to bring menstrual hygiene in village and households.
