Increase MBBS seats: Qualified candidates

NEET qualified candidates have appealed the State Government to increase the MBBS seats from 100 to 150 at JNIMS from the coming academic year.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, the students said Chief Minister N Biren Singh had earlier on social media announced that the Centre has given approval for increasing the MBBS seats at JNIMS by 50 more.
The Government should act on this and effectively increase the seats from the coming academic year, they said.
Johnson Kamei, secretary 'Demand Committee on Upgradation of 50 MBBS seats by NEET-UG, 2020 Qualified Candidates' said the number of candidates appearing NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) from Manipur increases every year.
As per the NTA (National Testing Agency) which conducts the examination, as many as 6402 from the State registered for the examination in 2019 while 7049 medical aspirants, registered for the 2020 examination.
At present, the total number of MBBS seats at RIMS and JNIMS is 225 and of this, 115 seats are reserved for State candidates.
The number of seats reserved for State candidates at JNIMS is 85 while it is 30 at RIMS.
As the number of aspirants increases every year, the intake capacity and State quota should also be increased and save the career of NEET qualified candidates, Johnson said.
Centre has approved 157 new medical colleges across India including Assam and 43 of them have already become functional.
Other States have more medical colleges and MBBS seats and they are able to produce greater number of doctors every year to meet demand whereas Manipur has only two medical colleges and lacks doctors.
COVED-19 is now having a toll in the State due to lack of manpower and doctors, he said, appealing the Government to increase the number of MBBS seats at JNIMS.
