Myanmar Police open fires, one injured

Imphal, December 26 2011:
A teenage boy was injured when the Myanmar Police suddenly opened fire from a sentry post in Myanmar bordering Manipur.
The incident occurred at around 2 pm yesterday, at Moreh Gate number 2, under Chandel district.
Two rounds of gun shots were fired from the sentry post of the Myanmar Police.
One of the bullets hit a teenage boy who was playing football along the Manipur border.
He was injured in the leg.
The injured teenager has been identified as one Abdul Shah (18) s/o Md Apik of Moreh ward number 5 .
Following the incident, people of Moreh area came out and protested.
As a result the border was sealed yesterday.
According to reports reaching here, people of Manipur who have gone to Namphalong market and Tamu market in Myanmar were unable to return to Manipur and at the same time people from Myanmar who were in the Manipur border were also not able to go back to their respective places.
Later, a meeting was held between the Myanmar Police and the Indian Army officers in Manipur border, where the Myanmar Police clarified that the incident occurred due to an accidental firing by a personnel who was on duty at the sentry post.
It is reported that the leaders of different communities settling at Moreh were not allowed to attend the meeting between the Myanmar Police and the Indian Army Officials initially and that they were only called in towards the end of the meeting.
The community leaders have, therefore, demanded that until and unless the Myanmar police give an assurance that such type of incidents will not be repeated in the future, Moreh bazaar will be closed down indefinitely.
As such all the shops have remained closed presently and the agitation is continuing.
Movement of vehicles in Moreh has also been stopped.
The injured teenager has been admitted to Shija Hospital here.
