Imphal, July 12 2011:
A newly founded Centre for study of social exclusion and inclusive policy(CSSEIP) of MU is all set to organize an academic panel discussion on 'Social exclusion in Manipur' at MIMS conference hall of the varsity on July 14 .
Informing this Prof L Tombi Singh,Director CSSEIP speaking to media persons here said the academic discussion will be held as a prelude to the state level debating competition as part of consolidating and concluding the findings of the district level debating competitions held earlier.
The district level debating competitions on "No proactive social exclusion prevails in Manipur" had already been organized from February to May last throughout the state.
The CSSEIP sponsored debate seems to throw some lights of a systematic exclusion especially among the tribals in the hills from development process, denial of rights to livelihood and lack of participation of tribal communities in various civil organizations etc as it aims to create awareness of the different forms of social exclusion prevailing in the state.
The centre which was perhaps the first of its kind in the north eastern states,is also aims to conceptualize and understand the nature and dynamics of social exclusion and inclusive policies besides giving suggestion and recommendation in the formulation of policies for protecting the rights of excluded groups.
Dr Thiyam Bharat Reader(Economics) of CSSEIP commenting on the main objective of the centre said, generally social exclusion is said to be a process through which certain groups are discriminated on account of their caste, religion, ethnicities, gender etc.
In other words,it is the inability of certain sections of the people to participate in aspects of different facets of social life,he added.
Social exclusion is also understood as the denial of equal opportunity by certain groups in society which leads to marginalization of individuals to participate in social, political and economic domains of our society.
In the valley also, there has been social exclusion in the form of gender discrimination, exclusion of valley people from settling in the hills etc.
