Advocacy workshop on HIV/AIDS held

Imphal, June 10 2012:
A one day state level advocacy workshop on HIV and AIDS for judicial officers, para-legal volunteers of Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) and advocates was held at Tribal Research Institute (TRI) at Chingmeirong today.
The Workshop was organized by Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS) in association with MASLSA.
Dr.RK Rosie, Deputy Director (IEC & MAINSTREAMING) of MACS; A Guneshwor Sharma, Member Secretary of MASLSA and SH Victor, Consultant of MACS participated in the workshop as resource persons.
Speaking on the topic, 'HIV and AIDS: Its basic and medical aspect', Dr.RK Rosie highlighted different routes for HIV transmission, its prevention, objectives of National AIDS Control Programs and divisions under MACS.
The main objective of Targeted Intervention is to prevent HIV infection from High Risk Groups to general population, she said, adding that various tests need to be conducted before declaring blood safe.
Pointing out that the most common disease for HIV infected person is Tuberculosis and skin disease, Dr Rosie observed that prevention is the only medicine available for HIV/AIDS and to know one's HIV status, he/she can approach Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre.
She also stressed on Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) and Prevention of Parents to Child Transmission (PPTCT) .
A Guneshwor Sharma spoke on the topic, 'Role of MASLSA in providing legal services to the people affected and infected with HIV and AIDS', and expressed his concern over spread of HIV and AIDS.
Informing that free legal aids are being provided to women and children, he also explained various steps required for seeking legal aid.
Speaking on the topic 'Mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS in various departments and civil society organizations'; Sh Victor expressed serious concern over rising graph of HIV/AIDS infection in the hill districts of the state.
