Ukhrul, July 31 2017:
The rare pinkish flower popularly called Wuyawon (Caulokaempferia secunda) has been found blooming at the lower mountain ridge of Shirui Kashong, Ukhrul.
With this finding, it is now established that Wuyawon not only blooms at Shingcha village but also at the lower slope on the northern side of the Shirui hillock called Sarumkateng.
Shirui villagers call Wuyawon as Kongsangwon.
Roughly translated, Kongsangwon means "necklace and flower" in Tangkhul.
Wuyawon blooms at a periphery of 1 square kilometer at the lower ridge of Shirui hills.
A peculiar type of tree also flourish along with the Wuyawon called Nayongthing (monkey tree) because of its flexibility which attract trekkers to hang and swing from the branches of the tree.
A local man from Shirui village, Leiyopam Shangh said that a wide range of wild flowers bloom at different seasons at Shirui hills.
Before the Shirui Lily blooms, wild Rhododendrons bloom during the spring.
Lily start to bloom from mid of May and last till June while Wuyawon and Horamwon (Summer flower) bloom from about July midweek (20th) till the first week of August.
Horamwon blooms at the hill top (Shirui Kashong) along with white flowers (summer flower) amid the mist, offering a beautiful view to all.
Shirui peak (Kashong) from a distance looks like a snow covered mountain, luring visitors to climb the height of Shirui peak during this season.
Leiyopam said although the villagers sight Wuyawon at the lower mountain ridge (Sarumkateng), they never realized her majestic beauty and left it unexplored for many years.
Leiyopam said that no one thought that Wuyawon can become so popular and attract visitors during monsoon, apart from Shirui Lily, which has become a name all over the world.
In order to protect the rich flora and fauna of Shirui village, the villagers have come up with the proposal to construct Shirui Lily Heritage Park at the foothill to showcase the beauty of the hills to all the visitors.
Shirui hill is situated from 1700 metres to 2800 metres above sea level, Nature lovers can camp at Shirui hills to observe the arrival of the migratory bird called Shiri (Grey sighted thrush) from the second week of December onward.
