Vocational training for women prisoners : Jail administration gets a fresh push

Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai today visited women prisoners at Manipur Central Jail and invited them to tell her all their tales of woes and difficulties.
The women prisoners hailed the Social Welfare Minister for her benevolence, words of encouragement and her efforts to open a source of income for each of them.
A vocational training programme for women prisoners was opened today at Manipur Central Jail under the aegis of Manipur Women Development Corporation.
SSP (Jail) IK Muivah, jail officials and officials of the Manipur Women Development Corporation were also present at the inaugural function.

Altogether 15 embroidery machines have been brought to the jail and 36 women prisoners would be given training on embroidery so that they can earn a regular income.
Speaking at the occasion, AK Mirabai called upon the women prisoners not to harbour any inferior complex.
Asking the women prisoners to tell her all their woes, Mirabai assured that she would take up welfare programmes for underprivileged women.
The corporation has been organising training programmes with a vision to empower underprivileged women and make them economically independent, Mirabai stated who is also chairperson of the corporation.
Even as the women prisoners had committed unlawful activities in the past, it's time for them to undo their follies and live a life of virtue and dignity, Mirabai exhorted.
She also assured one embroidery machine to each of the women prisoners after the six months vocational training programme when their prison terms end and come out of jail.
Jail authorities felicitated the Minister by presenting gifts like tools (Mora), bags and other articles made by prisoners.
