Imphal, February 16 2016:
A farmers' training programme on 'Scientific mithun husbandry for improving livelihood' was held opened today at KVK, Hengbung, Senapati district.
The numbers of Mithun (Shandang) found in Manipur is much lesser than the same species of animals found in Nagaland and Arunachal Pra-desh.
The total number of Mithun found in Manipur has declined to just about 13,000.In the hill districts of Manipur, Shandang is reared by letting them off in the wild.
Jhum cultivation and deforestation activities are the primary reasons for the fast depletion of Shandang population.

Apart from its meat, Shandang is closely associated with the culture of many tribal communities of Manipur.
Moreover, the animal has its utilities in manufacturing many industrial products thereby enhan- cing its economic importance.
The three-day training programme being organised by KVK Hengbung was sponsored by National Training Centre on Mithun, ICAR Jharnapani, Nagaland.
The last day of the training programme would feature a Mithun Mela on February 18 at Haipi, Sadar Hills.
More than 70 farmers belonging to different hill areas of the State attended the opening session where Additional Chief Secretary Shambhu Singh, ICAR-NRC on Mithun Director Dr Abhijit Mitra, NYK Kangpokpi District Youth Coordinator S Gourakishore and FEEDS/KVK-Senapati president Haokholet Kipgen were seated on the dais as presidium members.
Speaking at the opening session, Shambhu Singh remarked that jhum cultivation and shrinking forest areas have reduced the population of Mithun to the verge of extinction.
Rearing of Mithun can not only augment income but would also help preserving forests and environment.
In the afternoon session, KVK-Senapati SMS (Vety) Dr N Muhindro presented a paper on 'Orientation of the programme and pre-test of training programme' .
The programme also featured a farmers-scientists interaction and problem identification session.
