Lamka, July 10 2012:
The district administration along with the local police today pulled up five trucks, a tractor and two JCB cranes along the Tipaimukh road for violating the ban on quarry works.
The machineries were seized at a quarry site that has persistently threatened the National highway and polluted the water source of the township, about 3 kms from here.
There has been a ban on all forms of quarry in the area in an attempt to protect the highway as well as the water source but illegal quarry continues unabated leading the district administration to conduct a surprise raid.
Briefing the media inside the police station moments after the raid, Deputy Commissioner Jacintha Lazarus said appropriate charges would be slapped against those involved in the illegal quarry.
It is high time that everyone gaves a thought about it and refrained from the destructive exercise solely for one's personal gain, she said.
Besides the raid on the quarry site, the team has also impounded a huge quantity of plastic pipes from the PHED's water treatment plant at Bungmual.
The pipes are used in not only for illegal connections but also to obtain filthy and untreated water, she said.
Following today's exercise, the PHE department has promised to supply water though all its channels for an hour, between 6 am to 7am from tomorrow.
