Imphal, June 29 2011:
Despite being an important route connecting Imphal East with Imphal West district, the over 50-year old Sanjenthong (bridge) has not been able to keep up with the increasing volume of vehicular traffic, thereby making it a daily ordeal for commuters to cross it.
Apart from all sort of vehicles plying along the route, location of many important Government offices and institutes of the two twin capital districts on either side of the bridge have compounded the problem of traffic snarl so much so that one has to wait for long hours to cross over the bridge, specially during office hours.
Yet, in spite of its importance, the bridge has not been upgraded for the last 50 years.
The Government's attitude has not helped matter and the June 27 experience tells a story worth recalling.

Many important roads including Governor Road, Keishampat, Kanglapat line and Khoyathong remained besieged by workers of Block Congress Committees coming from different parts of the State to attend a day-long political conference organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee at Mapal Kangjeibung that day.
Organising the programme at Mapal Kangjeibung without any consideration over existing road condition in Imphal added woes to the commuters and the traffic congestion.
Half of the road in front of Johnstone Higher Secondary School as well in front of GM Hall remain dug out.
