Imphal, October 19:
At least five police personnel including one Sub-Inspector were injured when unidentified militants ambushed a convoy f the Thoubal SP at Kakching Khunou Lamkhai at 11.30 am today.
One civilian was also injured in the encounter that followed.
Police said the militants armed with sophisticated weapons ambushed the police team led by Thoubal SP while they were returning from Sugunu.
In the ambush five constables were injured.
The militants fired several rounds from the right side of the road.
The police team retaliated and an encounter ensued for around 10-20 minutes after which the militants escaped.
The injured personnel are identified as SI Romel Gangte (30), Yengkhoibam Pateshwar (45), Leishangthem Maniyaima (45), N Nimaichand (31) and Md Niyajmuddin (26).Romel, Pateshwar and Maniyaima are being treated at the JN Hospital security ward while Nimaichand has been discharged as he is not in a serious condition.
The civilian injured in the crossfire is identified as Mayanglangbam Raghu (30) of Kakching Khunou Hijam Leikai.
He is treated at RIMS.
A bullet proof vehicle of the police received substantial damage in the attack.
Police along with reinforcements conducted a massive search operation in the area after the incident.
However, there is no report of any arrest.
In separate incidents Bishnupur commandos arrested a member of RPF finance section at Keibul at around 7 this morning.
He is identified as Salam Naba (28) of Keibul Awang Leikai.
In the follow up action another cadre was also arrested at Moirang College gate a little later.
