AMWJU celebrates 40th foundation day

Imphal, September 16 2013: The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) today celebrated its 40th foundation day at Manipur Press Club here with Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam as chief guest.

Speaking at the occasion, Gaikhangam observed that there are many issues in the State which are unique and not common in mainland India.

He also underscored the role of media towards bringing a solution to the conflict situation being witnessed in Manipur.

Noting that the ancestors named the land Sana Leibak (golden land) with valid reasons, the Deputy Chief Minister called upon all the people to work for integrity , irrespective of whether one belongs to the hills or the valley.

Pointing out that the form of Government seen in India is Parliamentary democracy, Gaikhangam asserted that media is one of the four pillars of Parliamentary democracy.

Pen, the main weapon of press/media is mightier than a sword and faster than a bullet.

Media has the power to create political or social unrest.

At the same time, it has the capacity to mitigate conflicts and mollify tense situations.

If some groups rake up an issue, there must be a solution.

There is no issue which cannot be resolved through dialogue, Gaikhangam asserted.

Education Minister M Okendro highlighted media's contribution in disseminating information about Government projects and also in making the projects successful.

The so called liberation movement of rebel groups has its merits and demerits.

But the movement is now outweighed by demerits, that it why the rebels have turned their weapons to the people.

He also appealed to all concerned not to impose any restriction or try to gag media.

Journalists have the capacity to project an issue in the right perspective or in the wrong light.

As such, people in the profession of journalism need to be tactful and thoughtful, Okendro said.

MLA Kh Joykishan too appealed for a free and fair media.

Media is the voice of the people for it reflects people's intention, desire and demands.

Lamenting that media in Manipur is often put under immense pressure, Joykishan appealed to all concerned to make media a disturbance free zone.

AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai reminded that AMWJU was set up in 1974.At the time of its establishment the union had just 53 members, but today it has 270 members.

However, the condition of journalists in Manipur is pathetic.

Their working hours are much longer compared to what they get as salaries.

He also informed the gathering that AMWJU has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister pushing for a charter of demands including establishment of a press academy in Manipur.
