Imphal, June 06:
Vice president of the MPCC (I) and Power Minister Gaikhangam is most likely to be the next president of the MPCC (I).
Talking to The Sangai Express, a well placed source from Delhi today said that Gaikhangam has emerged as the top contender for the post.
Chief Minister O Ibobi has also reportedly thrown his weight behind the Gaikhangam, said the source adding that the chances of Ibobi continuing with the post was nipped in the bud as AICC chief Sonia Gandhi staunchly support the principle of one man one post.
On the chances of Rishang becoming the next president of the MPCC (I), the source said that this most unlikely as he is already the Rajya Sabha MP nominated from Manipur.
Gaikhangam was earlier tipped to be the next chief of the State Congress unit, but the equation changed rapidly after some Congress men mooted the idea that Ibobi continue as the president in view of the Assembly election due in two years time.
A proposal was even floated to create a post of Working President of the MPCC as that would give enough time to the Chief Minister to attend to other matters.
However this proposal was shot down as the Congress has no culture of the post of working president, said the source further.
Rishang came into the picture after some elected District Committee presidents proposed his name.
Since then the general assumption was that the fight would be between the Chief Minister and the Rajya Sabha MP.
However now it is Gaikhangam who is hotly tipped to be the next president of the State Congress unit.
