Imphal, November 30:
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has announced that a separate policy would be formulated by the Government in connection with the incentive awards and other benefits that would be given to sportspersons who win medals at Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
Speaking at the felicitation function of MC Mary Kom and L Sarita who won gold medals in their respective wealth category of the recent 4th World Women Boxing Championship, 2006 as well as another woman boxer Ibemcha who participated in the same championship at Khuman Lampak here today, the Chief Minister said the policy would spell out the amount of incentive awards and Government jobs to be given to such players who win medals in Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and other world championships.
The policy would be formulated and implemented very soon, he added.
While observing that Mary Kom preferred the post of Deputy Director to the Assistant Director being offered by the Government on the ground that the pay scale she is receiving is the same as an SI and Sarita wants the post of DSP, the Chief Minister noted that conceding to their demands might cause undue problems in the future.
On the ongoing agitation for upgradation of Jiribam Sub-division into a full-fledged revenue district, the Chief Minister, who was the chief guest of the function, noted that although the demand for upgradation of Jiribam into a full-fledged revenue district is reasonable, its fulfilment without considering the same demand for Sadar Hills might cause unrest.
So discussion on upgradation of Jiribam and Sadar Hills into full-fledged revenue districts would be taken up simultaneously.
He also appealed to the people of Jiribam to stop taking recourse to violent agitation by saying that the Government does not mean that the demand would not be given, but is just a matter of time.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Govindas Konthoujam who also spoke at the occasion said Manipur contingent is making all out efforts to win more medals in the upcoming National Games to be hosted by Assam Government.
MLA Vivek Raj Wangkhem was also among the dignitaries present during the function attended by many sportspersons.
