Imphal, July 28 2021: A single bench of the High Court of Manipur has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East to ensure availability of water to the residents of Chalou Maning Leikai, which has been declared a containment zone.

The direction was given by Justice Kh Nobin today after the hearing of the Public Interest litigation filed by Moirangthem Maipak.

The PIL was filed under Article 226 of the Constitution with a prayer to direct the respondents (the State) to take up appropriate steps to provide essential facilities such as safe drinking water in the area.

The PIL also mentioned that failing to provide safe drinking water is akin to depriving the rights of its citizens The Court after hearing the PIL observed that the main prayer of the PIL is to direct the respondents to comply with the guideline issued by the WHO.

The Court then directed the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East to ensure availability of water to the residence of Chalou Maning Leikai.
