Thoubal, June 27 2013:
The indefinite Chandel District bandh called by Kuki and Naga villages chiefs and chairmen of Tengnoupal and Machi affected normal life in Chandel district today.
Vehicles stayed off the Imphal-Moreh section of NH 2 and other roads leading to the district headquarters.
Bandh supporters blocked the roads by piling up logs, woods and boulders.
Shops were also closed in the district headquarters.
However, there is no report of violent incident on the first day of the bandh.
While briefing the media persons at Tengnoupal, Holkhokhai Mate, chief of Chehlep said that the Kuki village chiefs do not oppose the implementation of 25% of MGNREGS fund by the ADC members but we are demanding the wages and material components under the scheme 2012-13 which was not yet released by the Programme Officer till date.
He warned of intensifying the agitation if the concerned programme officer does not release the said fund at the earliest.
Modang Maring, chief of Salemphai while speaking to media persons at Tuishimi said that the Naga village chiefs were strongly opposing the implementation of 25% of MGNREGS fund by the ADC members.
He therefore urged the concerned authority to release the fund directly through the account of the concerned villages.
