Cabinet okays recruitment for fire service dept, pensions for WWII veterans

The state Cabinet has given its green signal to fill up the vacant posts in the fire service department as part of its modernization plans and a pension scheme for living World War II veterans.
The meeting took place from 2 pm this after at the Chief Minister's Secretariat with the Chief Minister O Ibobi in chair.
Giving details of the meeting, government spokesperson and CAF & PD minister, M Okendra stated that owing to the shortage of staff the district fire service stations in both hills and valleys districts are facing a mammoth problem in fighting fires and saving the lives and properties of the public.
He informed that a total of 149 staff including those for existing vacancies and fresh creation in the department will be selected through direct recruitment procedures.
Out of them, 67 comprised of new vacancies of firemen for the upcoming fire sub-stations at Noney in Tamenglong district, Tadubi and Saikul in Senapati district, Yairipok in Thoubal district.
On the other hand, he announced that veteran soldiers of the state who took part in World War II as servicemen of Assam Rifles/Regiment and are still alive will be honored by the state government through the payment of monthly pension.
Twelve such war heroes have been identified and the Cabinet had approved a monthly pension of Rs 1,200 each for them, he stated.
After discussion on the other agendas taken up at today's sitting, the Cabinet approved augmentation of the unemployment allowance given to educated disabled persons by social welfare department and extraction of the rule making Cabinet's permission mandatory for the respective departments in filling up vacancies created by superannuation of staff or their expiry.
The minister stated that 387 persons are currently getting benefits under the unemployment allowance scheme for educated disabled, with variance in the amount according to their educational qualifications.
He said under the government's structures matriculates and under graduates will receive Rs 400 each per month, while graduates and post graduates will get Rs 500 and Rs 600 respectively.
