Imphal, August 29 2023:
The Committee on Peaceful Co-existence Manipur (CPCM) has condemned the proliferation of unverified news, especially the recent claim of kidnapping that misplaced blame on a certain community thereby maligning their name.
CPCM convenor Sajad Buiyamayum made the statement during a press briefing at Manipur Press Club today.
Such spread of fake news and smearing the reputation of a community might have negative repercussions on the unity of the State and might also cast undue aspersions on the movement of people belonging to that community, he said.
Thus, making an appeal to the CSOs and the public to ascertain if certain individuals are responsible for spreading such fake news that can cause tensions between different communities, he also urged the media fraternity to refrain from publishing/broadcasting unverified news while naming specific communities.
Further, he expressed disappointment over today's Assembly session which lasted for only a few minutes and added that it will be remembered as an embarrassment throughout history.
Separately, expressing concern over the circulation of fake kidnapping rumours, the Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has also questioned if certain agents bent on causing divisions in Manipur are responsible for the problem.
In a statement, MMWO appealed to the Government to resolve the matter and put an end to the unfounded rumours maligning the name of one community.
