Two-day programme under NICRA Project kicks off

A two-day multi disciplinary training cum awareness programme on "Climate Adoptive Agricultural Practice for Rainfed Ecosystem" under National Innovation in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) Project was kicked off today at the conference hall of ICAR Manipur Centre at Lamphelpat.
The programme was organised by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre in association with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ukhrul and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chandel.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr N Ajitkumar, Nodal Officer, NICRA and SMS Plant Protection, ICAR- KVK, Ukhrul stated that the NICRA programme is well suited to the current times.

Stating that the NICRA Project was launched in 2016-17 at a village in Ukhrul and consequently spread to other villages, he said that the project aims to enhance resilience of Indian agriculture to climate change and climate vulnerability and thus introduce alternative crops suited to the climate with an emphasis on short duration crops.
Aside from this, the project also provides capacity training programmes and awareness programmes related to climate change.
He added that under the project attempts will be made to plant new varieties of crops previously uncultivated in a region to test their viability.
Following this, the compatible crops will be planted in the selected villages under NICRA and appropriate training will be provided to the Horticulture Department and other stakeholders.
Field visits will also be paid to these sites and information about the compatible alternative crops will be shared with other NICRA villages, he said.
Meanwhile, Chandel was included in the NICRA Project in 2021 and around 15 people from Chandel and 30 from Ukhrul are participating in today's programme, he added.
The two-day multidisciplinary training cum awareness programme was attended by Md Zakir Hussain Khan, Mission Director MIDH and District Officer (H&Sc) Chandel; Dr Ramgopal Laha, Head of Regional Centre, ICAR Manipur Centre Lamphelpat; Dr I Meghachandra Singh and Dr A Ameeta Devi, Head, ICAR -KVK, Chandel were present as presidium members.
During the technical session of the programme, many resource persons spoke at length about various relevant subjects.
As a part of the programme, 30 kg of ragi, 500 poultry chicks, 100 Kachai lemon saplings, 40 kg onion seeds and three brush cutters were distributed to the attending farmers.
