Advocacy meeting on "State policy, child rights issues, our roles & responsibilities" held

Wide Angle Social Development Organisation in collaboration with CRY (Chile Rights & You) today organised a 1-day advocacy meeting for like minded stakeholders on "State Policy, Child rights issues, Our Roles and Responsibilities" at Sagolband, Moiranghanuba Leirak, Imphal.
The meeting was attended by S Sarat Kumar Sharma, former Chairperson, Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights; Khumuchcham Rinku, editor Imphal Times; Keisham Pradip Kumar, former member Manipur Commission for the Protection of Child Rights; Thiyam Rajkeshor, former Chairperson, CWC, Imphal West and Montu Ahanthem, secretary Wide Angle Social Development Organisation as resource persons, said Wide Angle in a release.
Members of CWC (Child Welfare Committee) Imphal East, Ukhrul, Tamenglong, JJB (Juvenile Justice Board) Noney, Tengnoupal, Imphal East, DCPU (District Child Protection Unit) Imphal West, CCI (Child Care Institutes) Nirvana Foundation also took part in the meeting.
Delivering the keynote address, RK Janita, project coordinator CRY, said that the present situation starting from May 3rd is an extraordinary situation which has resulted in extraordinary human tragedy especially to women & children.
"Children are the future pillar of the society, yet children appear to be the most neglected segment of our society, with the rights of a child being ignored.
Therefore, there is a need for change to ensure our children's rights", she added.
S Sarat Kumar Sharma opined that the State Policy of Children needs to be implemented as soon as possible in the current situation of the State.
"If there is a need for any amendment it could be done as per requirement later because a strong mechanism with legal authority is required", he added.
Montu Ahanthem highlighted the need for a convergence between different Government departments and agencies so that the children in the relief camps are benefited.
In the technical session, Keisham Pradip Kumar spoke on the topic, "Draft State Policy on Children- Present Relevance" .
He elaborated on the three important tiers of the policy namely accountability, convergence and psychosocial wellbeing of the children.
He also explained the three main rights of children- Right to Development, Right to Survival, and Right to Protection and Right to Participation.
Thiyam Rajkeshor delivered a lecture on the topic, "Role of State Institution Working on Children" .
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by RK Lakshmirani, MIS coordinator, CRY.
