Imphal, March 03 2020:
The State Cabinet has given its consent to deferment of the election to six Autonomous District Councils of the State.
A Cabinet meeting held this afternoon in the Chief Minister's Secretariat with Chief Minister N Biren in the chair adopted a resolution to this effect.
Briefing media persons after the meeting, Government spokesman and Education Minister Th Radheshyam said that the State Cabinet agreed to postpone the ADC election after deliberating certain proposals raised by the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) .
As per the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Councils Act, 1971, the ADC election can be deferred for six months, Radheshyam said.
Notably, the last ADC elections for Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati, Sadar Hills, Tamenglong and Ukhrul were held on June 1, 2015 in a single phase.
If one goes by the schedule of the last elections,, the ADC election should be held before June this year.
The HAC held a meeting on January 16 this year and decided to hold the ADC election under a party-less system.
The HAC meeting further decided to hold the ADC election in dry season, more precisely in November, as June-July when the ADC elections are usually held is rainy season.
