Imphal, September 29 2018:
A one day workshop on "Voice of The People Against Mob Lynching in Manipur, India" was held at Manipur Press Club, today.
The workshop, organized by the Muslim Council Manipur (MCM), was graced by Manipur Human Rights Commission Acting Chairperson Khaidem Mani as chief guest while Human Rights Council Manipur (HRCM) Chairperson Alhaj Md Jalaluddin moderated the function.
Speaking at the function, Mani stated that those who are involved in mob lynching or mob justice should be awarded befitting punishment as per the law.
He also assured that the Manipur Human Rights Commission will take up necessary actions, in connection with the Tharoijam mob lynching incident.
Mani reminded that a suo moto case has already been taken up by the Commission regarding the incident.
Decrying the trend of mob justice which is gradually growing in the State, he asked all to refrain from taking part in any mob violence and added that any criminal or offender will be dealt with as per the law.
He went on to cite that laws have to be regarded as the foundation of a civilized society and no one should be above the law.
In India, it seems that poor people find it difficult to take legal aid whenever necessary, he observed and noted that the purpose of establishing State Human Rights Commissions in different States of India is to look after the violation of human rights of the citizens as well as to assist in catering legal help to the needy persons.
He then asked all to approach the Manipur Human Rights Commission whenever they need any help concerning issues or cases of human rights violation.
Mani, who is also a Senior Advocate, lauded all CSOs and different communities in the State for preventing the Tharoijam mob lynching incident from building communal tensions.
Many other CSOs and intellectuals also expressed their views and opinions on mob lynching/mob justice during the workshop.
