Imphal, October 31 2020:
The DESAM has written to the Central Vigilance Commission to monitor and investigate the functioning of all teachers education institutes.
The student body appealed to the Chief Vigilance Commission to table a vigilance action report after a thorough investigation into the anomalies and irregularities committed in teachers education institutes of the State as a part of observing the Vigilance Awareness Week (October 27 to November 2).Speaking to media persons at their Kwakeithel office today, DESAM secretary general Leishangthem Lamyanba Meitei said that the student body has been paying special attention to the teacher fraternity with a firm conviction that teachers can reform and save the Manipuri society.
However, there have been several instances of commercialisation of education.
There are also many people who take up the profession of teaching even though they are completely unsuitable to the profession.
Taking serious note of these ugly realities, DESAM submitted a memorandum to the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, Lamyanba said.
Apart from highlighting the case of leakage of question papers for MEd examination, the memorandum urged the Central Vigilance Commission to ensure that examinations are held strictly in accordance to rules.
It also highlighted the anomalies committed in the process of admission to teachers education institutes and how internship to aspiring teachers are done just nominally.
Most teachers education institutes of the State do not have adequate infrastructure nor do they have regular Principals.
In total contravention of the NCTE norms, guest faculties are appointed to these institutes, Lamyanba said.
An additional grant of Rs 10 crore was provided to the Department of Education, Manipur University under UGC's Pandit Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers & Training so as to upgrade the department to the level of school of education, said the DESAM secretary general.
However, MU and NCTE came to an understanding and agreed on opening a Department of Teachers Education instead of any school of education, he said.
He said that a copy of their memorandum was also submitted to the NCTE Chairperson.
