Conquering Mt Everest: Puyamcha Mohon, Shangker, Bidyachand follow suit

Imphal, May 19 2013: After Ningthoujam Bidyapati Devi and Nameirakpam Chingkheinganba have conquered summit of Mt Everest on May 17 and 18 respectively, Puyamcha Mohon, another Manipuri climber in the team of Ist North East India on Top of the World Mount Everest Expedition-2013 today scaled the world's highest mountain and unfurled the tricolor as well as the expedition flag atop Mt Everest.

On the other hand, two more Manipuri climbers, namely Phairembam Bidyachand and Chirom Shangkar Singh, both cadets of 14 Manipur Bn, NCC, Imphal and are part of an All-India NCC Team, have also successfully scaled the peak of Mt Everest today.

Puyamcha Mohon, who is also the Deputy Leader of the Expedition team, submitted the peak of Mt Everest at 8.15 am (IST).

He was the last member of the team to attempt the peak.

Out of the total 13 climbers in the team of Ist North East India on Top of the World Mount Everest Expedition-2013, 10 of them have successfully conquered the summit of the world highest mountain.

On May 17, Bidyapati and two other members, namely Anand Gurung and Nima Lama summitted the peak.

The following day (May 18), Nameirakpam Chingkheinganba, Anshu Jamsenpam, Davi Zohmangaiha, Tarun Saikia, Kazi Sherpa and Wansuk Myrthong stepped their feet on the peak of Mt Everest.

Chingkheinganba has scripted history by becoming the youngest Indian to summit Mt Everest, Bidyapati will do down in the history as the first Manipuri woman and the only second from Manipur to scale the peak of Mt Everest.

Among the rest of the successful climbers, Anshu Jamsenpa of Arunachal Pradesh created a new history as the first mother of two kids to climb the summit of mighty Mt Everest three times.

David Zohmangaiha of Mizoram, Wansuk Myrthong of Meghalaya, Tarun Saikia of Assam and Anand Gurung of Sikkim have also become the ever first Everest summitters of their respective States.

Three climbers of the expedition team withdrew from attempting the summit of Mt Everest due to injuries or illness.

The overall performance of the expedition team is said to be exemplary as they have recorded maximum target.

The Ist North East India on Top of the World Mount Everest Expedition-2013 was the first ever expedition comprising exclusively of mountaineers from 6 states of North East India.

It was funded by North Eastern Council, Shillong, supported by Planning Department,Government of Manipur and implemented by Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA), Manipur.

In a statement, Secretary of MMTA Ph Chandrakumar Sharma has conveyed gratitude to all who extended their helping hands to make the expedition a grand success and also said that the wide coverage given in the print and electronic media was most appreciated.

On the other hand, two cadets of 14 Manipur Bn NCC, Imphal namely Senior Under Officer (SUO) Phairembam Bidyachand Singh and Under Officer Chirom Shangkar Singh scaled the peak of Mt Everest at around 7.30 am IST today.

Both were selected as part of the All India NCC Team from Northeast Directorate.

19-year old Bidyachand hails from Moirang Khunou Tera Makhong and he is the son of Phairembam Manihar.

Bidyachand is attached to 14 (M) Bn NCC, Moirang College Unit.

Shangkar is also 19 yeard old and attached to 14 (M) Bn NCC, Imphal of Imphal College Unit.

He is from Waheng Khuman Mamang Leikai, Nambol and is the son of Chirom Sanajaoba and Chirom Ongbi Mangolnganbi Devi.

Issuing a statement in this regard, ANO 14 (M) Bn, NCC Imphal Lt (Dr) Bhabananda Takhellambam said that this is one of those rare feats which the NCC cadets of Manipur have achieved.

According to the statement, the NCC team began their training from September 2011.They were trained at various Mountaineering Institutes of the country.

After completing the Basic Mountaineering Course BMC) at Atal Bihari Vajpaye Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports, Manali, the team attended the Advance Mountaineering Course (AMC) at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling in West Bengal.

They were also part of various expeditions including the pre-Mount Everest expeditions.

The first phase of the pre-Mount Everest, the Special Mountaineering Course (SMC) was conducted at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi in Uttarkhand.

In the 2nd phase, they scaled Mount Deo-Tibba peak (6001 metres) and Mount Kamet (7756 metres) in the 3rd phase.

For the phase of Pre-Mount Everest, they were trained at Saichen Battle School of Army Mountaineering Institute.
