Imphal, May 29 2021:
Keeping in view of the rising number of children infected by Covid-19, young paediatrician Dr Taorem Yaikhomba has volunteered to visit such children in home isolation and assess their conditions at free of cost.
Dr Yaikhomba, who is a specialist paediatrician working in Shija Hospitals and Research Institute at present, thinks that such voluntary service has become the need of the hour and so he took the decision of visiting Covid positive children in home isolation.
He is all set to begin his voluntary service in different localities of Konthoujam assembly constituency from Sunday onwards along with assistance from likeminded nurses, who are willing to make such voluntary services.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, Dr Yaikhomba confided that he took the decision after seeing the inconveniences faced by parents of such children.
He will also provide medicines, hand sanitisers and face masks for the child patient free of cost.
He will also cover non-Covid patients in his home visit and extend assistance in providing treatment at Shija Hospital if any child requires hospitalisation.
Dr Yaikhomba affirmed he will render the service along with active participation of local clubs.
Regarding the increasing impact on children by the virus, the young doctor said that so far 6693 children under the age of 18 years have been infected by the coronavirus.
Out of them 3464 are males and 3229 are females.
Positive patients often face stigma during isolation.
At the same time, many parents are reluctant to visit hospitals and he will try his best to address those issues, Dr Yaikhomba said and informed that his service will begin from around 2 pm after the hospital duty.
Since children in home isolation are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, he will not use PPE suits in his visit, he added.
Raising concern over the increasing impact on children, Dr Yaikhomba said that children generally get the infection from an adult family member, who goes out and is exposed to the virus.
He then appealed all to strictly follow Covid relevant SOPs and practice Covid relevant hygiene like hand washing and proper sanitisation before entering home even if one has to go out.
He then urged the public not to remove masks after the end of a gathering even if there is nobody left since virus might be present in the air for some time.
He also urged all to keep the habit of opening doors and windows as far as possible.
