The All Loktak Lake Area Fishermen's Union, Manipur along with the residents took out a rally yesterday evening demanding the State Government to nullify the Loktak Lake Protection Act 2006, decommission the Ithai Barrage and to constitute a fishermen welfare Act.
Secretary of All Loktak Lake Area Fishermen's Union Oinam Rajen Singh said that the union has been organising protest rally every year from 2012.Ever since the State Government passed the Loktak Protection Act 2006, people of Loktak Lake area whose livelihood depend on fishing have been severely affected.
Though the State Government assured of possible assistance to the fishermen, nothing has been extended till now.
The compensation provided by the State Government have not reached the rightful owners of the phumdi, Oinam Rajen Singh stated.
"Declaring Thanga area to be promoted as a tourist destination by the Chief Minister has been condemned by the people of the area since the project will not benefit the locals of Thanga.
We will not compromise our issues with compensation.
We want our livelihood to be restored and the State Government should constitute an Act for the welfare of the fishermen at the earliest", Rajen said.
Social workers and leaders of local civil society organisations also took part in the rally.
