Thoubal, June 18 2019:
To discuss and enhance the responsibility to protect the environment from further destruction due to granting of large scale developmental projects like construction of dams, railway project, mineral mining etc, People Action for Social Change, Environment Conservation Network (Eco Network) and Khangabok Development and Students' Union (KDASU) have jointly organised a one day consultation programme on "Relationship between environment and its protection from destruction" at Khangabok, Thoubal District.
Though large number of trees were planted by various organisations and Government Departments on World Environment Day and MAHUD Minister, Th Shyamkumar has set a target to plant around 10 lakh saplings this year, we need to understand that Forest Report, 2011 published by the Minister of Environment and Forest (MoEF), GoI claimed that Manipur lost 190 sq km of forest areas in 2009 and 2010, said a statement of Nepoliyan Khundrakpam, publicity and information secretary, KDASU.
Saying that large scale projects need strict monitoring to save the environment, he urged the concerned authority to stop such activities before any alternative arrangements are made.
The consultation programme was chaired by RN Boipu Koireng, programme coordinator, UNM Manipur; Shadishkanta, secretary, YFPHR and Laishram Dijamani Meetei, secretary, KDASU, Khangabok.
Youth, meira paibi and volunteers of local organisations of Thoubal District also took part in the programme.
