Power dept collects Rs.4.59 crore from 787 consumers in a week

Imphal, February 01, 2011: A total of 787 electricity consumers have cleared their due bills during the department's drive against defaulters and unauthorized consumers which began on January 24. The department, in a statement today, informed that so far 679 default consumers have been disconnected while 58 defaulters have been booked under section 151 read with section 135 of the Manipur (Electricity) Act, 2003. Court cases have been filed against the 58 defaulters out of which 17 were caught on January 24 and put in jail.

They released on bail on January 27. A total of 787 consumers cleared their due bills at sites and together with the revenue collection at counters, the department have collected a revenue of Rs 4,58,99,146 till January 31. Of this, Rs.1,46,31,605 was collected from consumers of Paona Bazar, Haokip Veng, Old Lambuland, Kakhulong, Noguilong, North AOC, Thangal Bazar, Khoyathong Road, Keishamthong Moirang-ningthou Maning and Hodam Leirak covered by IED-I. Revenue amounting Rs.1,51,79,503 was collected from Keishampat Thiyam Leikai, Keishampat Leimajam Leikai, Keishampat Keisam Leikai under IED-II, Rs.1,16,65,789 from Singjamei Waikhom Leikai, Mange Makhong and Khongman Zone II and III under IED-III and Rs.44,22,249 from the area under IMD, that is Lairkyengbam Leikai.

During the drive at areas under IED-I, the team disconnected lines of 13 defaulters, and three unauthorized consumers were booked.

Lines of 28 defaulters under IED-II, 30 under IED-III and 36 under IMD were also disconnected.

No one was booked in these three divisions.

The statement also gives details of the monthly revenue collection under SE (Electric Circle-I) from April, 2010, the beginning of the current fiscal year 2010-11, to January 2011.The highest revenue collection was made in January 2011. In the month of January, a total amount of Rs.16,81,39,704 was collected, this is against the Rs.4,58,99,884 collected in the previous month of December 2010.It may be mentioned that in April, 2010, only Rs.73,69,385 was collected as revenue.

The department estimates power loss due to power theft, technical and commercial factors at 75 to 80 percent which is the highest power loss in the country.

The department has taken up the drive with the objective of improving power supply and it expects to bring down power loss to about 40 percent.

The present drive came up after the court served a notice of motion on January 20 in response to a PIL filed in the Gauhati High Court.

A source in the department said that there is an overdue electricity bill of Rs.280 crores to be collected from regular consumers.
