Imphal, December 11 2020:
As observed across various States of India in protest against one year of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), six student bodies in Manipur viz - AMSU, DESAM, KSA, MSF, SUK and AIMS joined hands to observe 'Black Day' by hoisting a black flag today.
Speaking during the 'Black Day' observation held at AMSU Headquarters, DESAM president Nameirakpam Edison said that December 11, 2019 was the darkest day for the North East people as the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was passed in Parliament and subsequently became an Act (CAA) .
Edison lamenting the continuous discrimination and other inferior treatments meted out to the people from the North East, recalled the massive movement against CAB under the aegis of North East Students' Organisation (NESO) and other organisations.
The Bill was however passed forcibly in Parliament amidst resentments, protests and arguments from various sections and as such the day is being observed as 'Black Day' by NESO to protest inconsiderate and forceful nature of the Central Government, he said.
With the announcement of early implementation of CAA, the numerically smaller North East people are apprehensive and starting to feel the heat of a possible demographic imbalance, he said while calling on the people of Manipur and North East to stand together to fight the evils of the CAA and likely 'demographic war' .
The observation was also attended by AMSU president Peter Salam, KSA president N Chetan and executives of MSF, SUK and AIMS.
Left parties too held a protest meeting and rally against CAA 'Black Day' was also observed in the State by the Left Front Coordination Committee here in Imphal today.
The observation organised by the committee formed by CPI Manipur State Council, CPI (M), Forward Bloc and RSP was marked by a protest meeting and a rally.
The protest meeting was convened against the passage of Citizenship Amendment Bill on December 11 last year by the BJP led NDA Government violating the norms of the Constitution of India and against the aspirations of the people of this secular country, said a statement of CPI (M).
Speaking during the protest meeting, the secretary of CPI (M), Manipur Unit, Ksh Santa said that the Left wing and like minded political parties will continue their struggle towards maintaining the integrity of the country and oneness among all citizens, the statement said.
Meanwhile, CPI Manipur State Council secretary, L Sotinkumar charged that the Modi-led Government is an anti working class people and a 'communal Government' and urged to extend support in the 'fight against such communal and exploitative forces', it said.
After the protest meeting, the cadres of the Left parties took out a rally sloganeering and displaying placards demanding revocation of the CAA.
N Ratan, secretary of RSP; Khomdram Gyaneshwar, secretary of Forward Bloc; Maisnam Jaykumar, assistant secretary of CPI; CPI leader, K Amusana; president of Nupi Marup, Sakhi Devi; Jatishwar and Waikhom Radha of BKMU; H Ibobi, secretary of Manipur Loumi Marup and others took part in the meeting and the protest rally, the statement added.
