Imphal, November 25 2013:
Women Action for Development (WAD) today observed International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
In a unique fashion, the NGO kick started the observance with the distribution of yellow badges to the visitors of Manipur Sangai Festival currently underway at Hapta Kangjeibung.
WAD secretary M Sobita said that the badges were distributed in order to bring awareness regarding the significance of observing the day to the revellers of the tourism festival.
Like in other parts of the world, the day was observed in Manipur as well, she added.
Informing that this year's theme was 'From peace in the home to peace in the world, let's challenge militarism and end violence against women', Sobita said that increasing number of cases of crime against women has now become a serious global issue.
If proper guidance and advice are not given to children and youth, one may even face the tragedy of becoming his/her own daughter a victim or his/her son a criminal, she added.
As part of the observance, a candle lighting service was also held at Malom where 10 civilians were gunned down by Assam Rifles personnel on November 2, 2002 that prompted Irom Sharmila to begin her marathon hunger strike.
