PHED initiates new projects

As a nodal department of delivering safe drinking water to the people, Public Health Engineering Department has been engaged in taking up many new initiatives across the State to cater to the need of the people.
Many new water supply projects have been taken up both in urban and rural areas and augmentation of already operated schemes has also been planned.
Sanitation programmes have also been put in place in the state by the department.
Urban water supply: With the growing population in Imphal City, safe drinking water demand is increasing day by day.
According to 2001 census, the estimated population is around 6.523 lakhs and is expected to be 8.705 lakhs by 2031.The present water demand is calculated to be 118.689 MLD and the requirement by the year 2031 will be 152.141 MLD.
But the actual water supply is hardly about 80 MLD only.
The distribution networks were laid for a limited area of the city (50%) are also quite old more than 40 years, corroded, undersized and cannot meet the present demand.
In view of all these problems and the urgent need of improving the system and to sustain the water supply infrastructure for another 30 years design period, PHED has prepared a DPR-"Integrated Water Supply Project for Imphal Planning Area" with an estimated cost of Rs.1830.3613 crore.
Phase-I of the project amounting to Rs.98.54 under JNNURM has been sanctioned during Feb.
2014 and it includes renovation of WTP at Koirengei, Khumanlampak, Singda, Kangchup,Kangchup Extension, Chinga, Porompat,Minuthong and Canchipur and also includes construction of 6 nos of intake,9 nos of WTP,5 nos of clear water reservoir, 3 nos of service/master reservoir, 3 nos of pumping station, one overhead tank and an emergency reservoir.
Phase-II of the project amounting to Rs.200 crore is proposed to be funded under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
Phase-III amounting to Rs.1531.82 crore is proposed to be funded under JICA fund.
During the year 2002-16, 216.04 kilometres of D.I pipes of various sizes have been laid and seven WTPs viz Irilbung, Old Thumbuthong, canchipur, Potshangbam, moirangkhom, waithoupat and singjamei ward No.17 have been constructed.
Five reservoir of 2.5 ML capacity are constructed at Keishampat, Babupara, Rahmania, Khongman and Koirengei.
Besides these, five overhead tank of 0.45 Ml capacity each are constructed at Assembly, Keishampat, Babupara, Nepramenjor and Thiyam leikai.
In addition to this, altogether 47 water supply schemes have been taken up at various District & Sub-Divisional headquarters, small towns and other places of public importance throughout the state under NLCPR and NEC.
Urban Sanitation: With French assistance under EAP, Sewerage Project for Imphal city (Phase-I) is taken up and it covers the area of Imphal Municipal Corporation (Ward No- 1,2,3,4,5,6,14,15,24,25&16).At present, construction of sewerage treatment plant and five pumping stations are completed.
Primary sewer network of 22.231 kilometres have been laid completely and out of 44.138 kilometres secondary sewer network , length of 29.138 kilometres has been laid.
Thus the overall physical progress up to that is 92 %.
The cost of the project is Rs.323.78 crores and the expenditure upto February 2016 is Rs.260.11 crores under State plan & Rs.41.54 crore under EAP.
Rural Water Supply: Under National Rural Drinking Water Programme(NRDWP), it is expected to provide safe drinking water supply to all the Census habitation of the State by 2012.Under the Programme during the year 2002-16, altogether 1374 habitations have been covered with an expenditure of 24176.03 lakhs.
As on 1 st March 2016, all the 9 districts with a total habitations of 2870 has given the coverage ranging from 25 to 100%.Of the districts, Senapati has the highest coverage of habitations with a no.totaling 621 out of 690 habitations.
Thoubal district has a minimum coverage of only 63 out of 110 habitations.
Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin ): Under the ambitious Flagship programme of the Government of India- Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin ) all the rural individual households (4,31,378 nos.), Government schools (3919 nos.), Anganwadi (1201nos.) of the state are to be provided sanitary latrine by 2nd Oct.
2019.Under the Mission, sanitary latrines have been constructed to all the Anganwadi Centres in the state.
320 sanitary complex have also been constructed out of 386 and cent percent coverage has also achieved in school toilets.
Of the total IHHL both in BPL and APL numbering upto 4,31,378 altogether 2,72,888 have been constructed so far and work progress is in full swing to meet the stipulated target.
An amount of Rs.111.67 crores has been sanctioned during 2002-2016 under the Mission.
