Horse Riding and Polo Club inaugurated at SSI

In an effort to improve the riding standards and to promote the traditional sport of Manipur, Red Shield Division has established a Horse Riding and Polo Club, Sainik School Imphal for the cadets in association with Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association.
Maj Gen SS Mishra, VSM, GOC, Red Shield Division inaugurated the Horse Riding & Polo Club at Sainik School, here today in the presence of S Buddhachandra Singh, president, Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, according to a statement issued by the PIB (Defence), Imphal.

Sainik School which was formed on Oct 7, 1971, has a history of excellence in the field of sports.
A need was felt by the GOC, Red Shield Division to provide the cadets with a riding school to give an early exposure to the students of horse riding and polo, a sport which is lovingly cherished in the State.
It is important to note that the game of "Sagol Kangjei" (Polo) originated in Manipur.
The State has a long history of many laurels being brought by the players in the field of Polo.
This Horse Riding and Polo Club will help to hone the skill of young riders and prepare them for national as well as international arena.
The events started off with unveiling of the foundation stone by Rudrani Mishra, wife of Maj Gen SS Mishra, VSM.
It was followed by tree plantation by the dignitaries present there.
S Buddhachandra Singh inaugurated the Riding arena by cutting the ribbon.
The ceremony also witnessed an impressive march past by the ponies and a spectacular tent-pegging event which saw a participation of six students of Sainik School, Imphal.
The inauguration of the Horse Riding and Polo Club marked the beginning of developing young riders of Sainik School, Imphal which will soon bear fruits for the State as well as the Nation, it added.
