World Breasfeeding Week kicks off

Social Welfare Department, Manipur kick-started the World Breast-feeding Week celebration at GM hall today.
Attending as the chief guest of the opening ceremony, Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai said mothers play a vital role in the overall development of a child.
World Breast-feeding Week is celebrated every year with the aim to promote and emphasize the value of breast-feeding for mothers as well as the child.
The Social Welfare Department has taken up various programmes for the welfare of mothers and their children.
One such programme is the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) that provides food, pre-school education, and primary health care to children under 6 years of age and their mothers, the Minister said.

She has urged all the mothers to breast-feed their children till they attain two years of age.
The Social Welfare Minister opined that the breast-feeding celebration should be observed for the whole year to ensure that maximum mothers take up breast-feeding for the well being of their children and their health.
Social Welfare Department Principal Secretary K Moses Chalai appealed to all the mothers to breast-feed their children.
Manipur State Commission for Women Chairperson Dr K Sobita also attended the opening ceremony.
Minister AK Mirabai also released a booklet of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) at Lamyanba Shanglen where the World Breast Feeding Week was also observed.
The celebration is being organised by the Breast-feeding Alliance of Manipur on the theme 'Breast-feeding: A key to sustainable development' .
The KMC booklet is written by Th Nandarani Devi, Associate Professor, College of Nursing, Medical Directorate and Athokpam Rightkumari Devi, Associate Professor, RDO College of Nursing.
