Chandel hosts first ever Guava fest

Chandel, October 13 2017:
The first ever Guava festival was organised at Liwa Sarei village community hall, Chandel district, today .
The event was organised by Liwa Sarei village authority to mark the bountiful harvest of Guavas which is grown abundantly in Sarei village .
The plant, which takes three months to bear fruits, has been the a source of livelihood and a way of income for the village denizens, reports our correspondent .
The programme was attended by DC, Chandel, Krishna Kumar, as the chief guest, president of Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation (CNPO), LV Robert as the functional president and SDO, Chandel, Ksh Siddharth and ADC, Chandel CEO, Ts Kothar, as guests of honour respectively .
Speaking at the event, Krishna Kumar stressed on the benefits and importance of Aadhaar card and opening bank account .
He urged all the people of the district to get enrolled and open their respective accounts in order to avail the initiatives and programmes provided by the Government .
The DC also assured to assist any initiative or start-ups introduced by the village authority .
The guava harvesting began simultaneously with the settlement of Mongsang village and every household started to plant guava at their respective houses .
Since then, the fruit has been popularly known as Mongsang Pungthol (Guava) .
Earlier, the people did not indulge in the business of guava and it became a profitable income source in 1941 when valley businesswomen came to buy the fruit .
The women used to carry baskets of guavas on their head upto Pallel to sell it and with the establishment of proper roads and passenger vehicles, the fruit were eventually brought to other areas as well .
The people consider the money obtained from selling the fruit, as a blessing from god to assist them in maintaining a family .
Different forms of dance and music events were presented during the programme.
