Imphal, March 20 2016:
Sangai population of Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) would be counted on March 29 under the aegis of Wildlife Wing, Forest Department and the Wildlife Institute of India.
Ahead of the Sangai headcount, an orientation programme of volunteers who would participate in the head count would be held at KLNP tomorrow.
This will be followed by a mock census on March 22 .
Watch towers have been erected at 32 vantage points inside the park specifically for the Sangai head count, informed a source.
The total population of Sangai in KLNP was found to be 204 when a similar head count was conducted in 2003 .
Sangai and Kharsha found in Jawa Lamjao and Laiphum would also be counted on April 2 and 4 by the Forest Department in association with NGOs.
Notably, the department has been working consistently to get Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park, declared as a world heritage site.
