Birds rescued

Imphal, February 20 2013:
Around 316 Ferruginous Pochards, locally known as Nganu Mitngoubi, an endangered and rare bird species, were rescued by one Thongam Dilip Singh (45) of Sekmaijin Thongam, Mayang Imphal today.
Dilip rescued the birds while they were lying trapped in a fishing net in a fish farm at Sekmaijin and handed the birds to volunteers of Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Sekmaijin Thongam.
The rescued birds were later released in Loktak Lake by the volunteers in the presence of the rescuer.

Noted environmentalist, Dr Kh Shamungou Singh said the bird is rarely found in the State while K Jugeshwar Singh, Principal, Kumbi College said the rescue is happy tidings for bird lovers of the State.
Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Sekmaijin Thongam is a group of dynamic and vibrant youths working for the cause of wildlife at Sekmaijin and its adjoining areas.
