Imphal, February 18 2018:
Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has said that compared to other parts of the country, women are getting their space and well deserved respect in Manipur.
Speaking as the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of the Nationwide competition on Legal Rights of Women held at Raj Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, today, the Governor said that it is the duty of every citizen to keep the high moral standard of the State by respecting women and they need to condemn news of atrocities, molestation and rape against women.
She said that the rights available to women in India can be broadly classified into two categories, namely Constitutional Rights and Legal Rights.
The Constitutional rights are those which are provided under the various provisions of the Constitution.
But mere existence of these Constitutional or Legal Rights is not sufficient as they need to be properly implemented and the attitude of the people about women need to change as well.
When the country was liberated from the British, "our fore fathers wrote the Constitution and foundation of women rights enshrined in the Constitution with 'Adult Franchise'.
It shows, unlike Saudi Arabia and African countries, women are treated equally as men in India," she claimed.
Recalling her initiative for empowerment of women regarding 33 percent reservation for women in the election of Local Bodies and Gender Budgeting, starting from her 30s, the Governor expressed satisfaction on seeing the Manipuri women's contribution in the field of politics, economy and society and expressed her desire to spread the news of the world's largest women market/Ima Market.
As part of the programme, prizes were distributed to the winners of the competition.
It may be mentioned that the competition, sponsored by the National Commission for women, was organized by MSCW on January 12, for all the College level students of the State.
The function was attended by the Education Minister Th Radheshyam Singh, Chairperson, Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), Dr K Sobita Devi, MSCW's members, Dr Farida Shah and Ranjita Golmei as special guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
