Crafts resource centre inaugurated

Imphal, April 10 2011:
India's first craft-based resource centre in cane and bamboo crafts has been opened at the premises of Women Income Generation Centre (WIGC), Thoubal Wangmataba today.
The centre is being run by WIGC in association with State Bank of India (SBI), Secretariat Branch.
SBI Secretariat Branch General Manager BB Das was the chief guest of the inauguration function.
Assistant Director (Handicraft), M&SEC Imphal, T Rollee Vareishim, Regional Investigator K Dinamani, M&SEC Imphal Investigator Th Rajen and SBI Secretariat Branch Deputy Manager H Rahman were also present in the function.
Speaking at the function, BB Das said that the State must reap the benefits from Union Government's decision of setting up a cane and bamboo crafts centre in Manipur.
He further observed that the artisans must stress on quality in order to market the products abroad.
T Rollee Vareishim said that the crafts products of Manipur have lots of demand in other States and foreign countries.
In her keynote address, WIGC secretary Indira Oinam said that the centre has been set up in Manipur for the first time in the country taking into account of material availability and production.
Artisans hailing from Thoubal, Bishnupur, Chandel, Imphal West and Imphal East are working at the centre.
Artisans from Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Ukhrul districts would also join later, WIGC secretary Indira Oinam added.
Wages for the artisans would be distributed through State Bank of India Secretariat Branch, Indira said.
