A one-day training programme on HIV/AIDS for youths and community leaders of Imphal East district was held at Bal Vidya Mandir at Porompat yesterday.
Speaking as one of the resource persons during the programme organised by SEACOM, Porompat in collaboration with AIDS Consortium, New Delhi, Ex-Consultant of NACO, Dr Khomdon Lisam expressed grave concern over the prevailing HIV/AIDS situation in Manipur and said new generations of young widows and orphans would emerge if some concrete measures were not taken up collectively to stop the spread of the epidemic.
He pointed out that women are four times more vulnerable than their man counterparts of getting exposed to HIV virus because of various factors including social mores and biological nature of women.
Ninety percent of HIV infection cases among the Manipuri women are spread from their husbands, yet 80 percent of the them think they are not at risk of getting infected, he noted.
In the technical session, Medical Officer in-charge of Primary Health Centre, Thanga, Bishnupur Dr Gita Thiyam presented a detailed acccount on the history of HIV infection, the mode of transmission of the virus from one person to another and measures to be adopted from falling prey to the dreaded virus as well as on the support care system for the infected patients.
