Rs 6 lakh robbed at gunpoint

A consignment amounting to Rs 6 lakh which was being delivered from the Imphal branch of Vijaya Bank at Thangal Keithel to its branch at Saikul II has been robbed by armed miscreants at gunpoint between Champai village and Leitaanpokpi bridge, according to Laishram Romen, the bank's Imphal branch manager.
Speaking to media persons, Romen said that the unfortunate incident happened at around 11 am today when the money was being transferred to the bank's Saikul II branch for easing some of the people's hardship with the fast approaching Christmas festival.
He said that two partially masked individuals in a numberless two wheeler vehicle overtook and blocked their Alto car ,which had four bank staff and one security personnel, and producing two pistols dragging him to the nearby hilltop and interrogated him at gunpoint.
"The gun-wielding masked men demanded us to hand over every bit of money we were carrying and made away with the large sum of money", he added.
The money consisted of Rs 4 lakh in Rs 2000 currency note, Rs 1 lakh each in Rs 100 and Rs 50 currency notes.
Romen stated that an FIR would be lodged and no more deliveries to far off places would be made until and unless ample securities are provided for the regional office during such deliveries.
Vijaya bank branch manager L Romen, ABM M Benhul Kom, Clerk N Bijaya, staff Laishram Priyokumar and security guard Md Abduhlla were travelling in the car when the unfortunate incident happened.
According to one of the staff, the gun wielding miscreants
spoke Kuki dialect.
