Imphal, December 15 2013:
Joint Action Committee Against Molestation of Child has complained to the Government that human right defenders are facing constant threats from unknown persons in the State.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, JAC Convenor G Panti said that various individuals including herself have been campaining to safeguard the rights of women and children in Manipur.
However, it is unfortunate that some unknown persons are discouraging these human right defenders by making threatening calls and texting abusive SMSs.
Panti said that she received a threat call from mobile phone number 9089665120 on December 11 .
She also received an SMSs from the same number that read as "Nangbu Panty yamna heisingba case ki expert lo nang kuidre eihakna nupini haina thadok pani, adubu haiyo nang na kari khangdana? Kari heidana? Tou-tou, houjiksu nangi garida chatli bani, kari pame hai u" (You Panty, are you an expert in dealing with important cases? Your days are counting, I have spared you as you are a woman.
What do you understand about the case? Now you are travelling in your vehicle, now tell me, what do you want?) .
Saying that the unknown person also gave missed calls repeatedly on her number, Panti requested the police to trace the caller and take action against her/him.
She added that it is unfortunate to make threats to women in Manipur, where women are being given respect deservedly.
The JAC has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Chief Minister regarding the matter.
