Imphal, May 04 2011:
In protest against the restriction imposed on the service of Thelagari (push-cart) inside Khwairamband Market area, all the Thelagaris would stay away from loading or unloading goods inside the market area from 6 am of May 5 to 6 pm of May 6 .
Announcing this during a press conference today, general secretary of All Manipur Muthiya Workers' Union Vijay Kumar Gupta said that the decision to cease work has been taken during a general body meeting of the Union today.
Vijay Kumar pointed out that normally Thelagaris are being used for transportation of goods, either for loading or unloading, in Khwairamband Bazar for the last many years.
But a recent decision of the Government of Manipur has imposed restriction on the service of Thelagaris giving a serious blow to the livelihood of many Muthiyas.
No proper parking space for Thelagaris have also been provided, he lamented.
When The Sangai Express contacted in this regard, DSP (Traffic) Victoria clarified that no restriction have been imposed on loading or unloading of goods from shops in Khwairamband Bazar area.
However, the possibility of misunderstanding among the large number of police personnel being deployed for ensuring clearance of street vendors and allotment of proper parking space in Imphal city may not be ruled out.
Nonetheless, every possible efforts are being taken up to avoid such misunderstanding, she said.
So, Thelagaris can continue to load or unload goods.
But they should not park anywhere they like.
They should avoid parking the Thelagari in front of shop for long hours too, the DSP Traffic added.
