Imphal, March 01 2019: Village headman of Mapao Jingso, Wungnaoyo Zimik conveyed that the villagers are striving to continue keeping the houses and surrounding areas of Mapao Jingso clean adding that this trend will be passed on to the villagers and the future generations as a moral education.

Mapao Jingso is located about 20 kms far from Imphal, under Saikul SubDivision of Kangpokpi district.

The Sangai Express visited the village and interacted with the villagers and their headman today.

During the visit, the villagers managed to keep the village surrounding clean and green from the starting point of the village to foothills, each houses, small roads, backyards etc.

Dustbins were seen installed at the roadsides too which shadows the level of awareness about cleanliness and healthy lifestyle.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the villagers maintain a clean lifestyle by maintaining proper drainage system, sanitary latrines, tidy rooms and kitchens while not a single plastic or piece of paper were seen anywhere the village area.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, Mapao Jingso headman Wungnaoyo Zimik said that the village forefathers used to reside at the Mapa Jingso hill top, however, owing to transportation constraints from the top of the hill, the villagers started residing at the foothills from 1963.He went on to state that earlier, there were 30 to 40 surnames but they started spreading out when they came down from the hill top to form three different villages at the foot hill namely Mapao Jingso, Mapao Thangal and Mapao Jingtun.

Headman Wungnaoyo further stated that there is a total of 600 population belonging to 108 surnames in Mapao Jingso and the people living in Mapao village area belong to Tangkhul community.

Speaking to The Sangai Express about development activities in the village, he maintained that a Government High School is present with enrolment of 60 students while a private school named Stepping Stone English School is set up in the area with enrolment of 200 students.

Although a Primary Health Centre is present in the area, the necessary staff and administration is absent, he said adding that only one nurse comes from the Saikul Subdivision at the time of polio immunization, deworming etc.

He went on to narrate that the villagers had to travel all the way to health facility centres in Imphal for treatment.

Talking about electric supply in the area, the village headman claimed that the village receives proper supply of electricity but some houses have prepaid system while some still use the old system.

We further claimed that the locals contributed to buy GI pipes and installed underground for facilitating fresh drinking water in the village.

Three Go to village camps, organised by Kangpokpi district administration, have been conducted in the village so far where the villagers have only the day to address their grievances and concerns to the officials, however, no positive actions have been witnessed till date while the villagers still have not received any benefit from the GTV camps.

He went on to narrate that three houses have been constructed for beneficiaries out the total six beneficiaries applied under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Housing For All scheme, while construction for the remaining three beneficiaries have not started till present date.

The headman claimed it covered around Rs 1,70 lakh for the construction of one house under the scheme.

As per the 2011 census, only 50 beneficiaries/families have received gas connection out of the total 60 families applied, he said adding that, unemployed families with ten members receive only 8 kg of rice under AAY scheme till date.

Claiming that the villagers never receive full quota of PDS rice so far, the village headman stated that the authorities concerned has also turned a blind eye to the grievances of the people despite repeated appeals.

Wungnaoyo stated that people from Japan often visit the village as the hill was one of the location of Japan war while lamenting that the villagers could never show enough hospitality to the tourists owing to the absence of guest houses.

The headman maintained that the village follows certain rule and regulations strictly including prohibition on deforestation, trapping/catching birds, drug abuse etc adding that any person violating these rules are served with fitting punishment.

Meanwhile, most of the women in the village are engaged in farming and weaving to manage their family while some sell fruits and vegetables at Pangei Keithel, Lamlong Keithel, Khunam Lampak and Khwairamband Keithel.

Wungnaoyo informed that at least 30 people of the village are doing Government service.
