Trafficked girls return home

Eight girls from Churachandpur who were rescued from the clutches of an alleged trafficking ring in Myanmar’s capital after they made a distress call to the district police returned home today, following a three-week ordeal that witnessed the intervention of the Indian Embassy, the State Government and several NGOs, reports our correspondent .
The girls were resportedly taken to Myanmar with the promise of finding jobs in Singapore and other foreign countries by a cartel that have been exposed by the district police in the first week of September .
Besides the Indian Embassy in Yangon, Impulse Care Info Centre, YMCA and ZYA-Yangon assisted the girls during the three-week ordeal before landing at Kolkota yesterday .
They were slapped with charges of unauthorized entry by the Myanmarese authority, days after their rescue .
Representatives from Impulse Case Info Centre (India), the State Government represented by S Thienlaljoy Gangte, AC to DC/CCpur and two officers from the Social Welfare Department received the girls at Kolkata and they were subsequently brought to Imphal today .
The Deputy Commissioner, Churachandpur Shyam Lal Poonia while receiving the girls along with the SP Rakesh Balwar said four of the girls who have not attained 18 years will be given free education if they wish to continue their studies while the Government will explore ways to rehabilitate the others .
Agriculture Minister V Hangkhanlian who attended a reception programme at the DC office later today handed over Rs 5000 each to the girls.
