'NE Festival of Plays' begins

Imphal, February 28 2016:
Five day long 'North East Festival of Plays' organized by the Art and Culture Department, Govt of Manipur and the Banian Repertory Theatre under the financial assistance of Ministry of Culture, Govt of India, commenced today at Maharaj Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound, Imphal.
Altogether, five theatre groups including one from Assam are participating in the five day long festival of plays which is schedule to conclude on March 3 .
The opening ceremony was attended by Commissioner of Arts and Culture, Govt of Manipur K Radhakumar as the chief guest while president of Theatre Centre, Manipur Wareppa Naba was the functional president.
Radhakumar stated that Manipuri Theatre has occupied a place in the international arena from the 1960s.He added that theatre groups should work further with support and participation from the general public as there is apprehension that Manipuri Theatre may lose its place from the international platform.
Functional president Wareppa Naba said that theatre acts as a clinical catalyst in changing the mindset of a society.
It also acts as a medium of educating the masses, he added.
On the opening day, Panthoibi Natya Mandir showcased a play "Punshi Kang-Khong" .
