Imphal, April 19:
Striking a defiant stand, MEELAL today said that the act of burning down the State Central Library on April 13 was not the first instance and recalled that the library was also set ablaze by the Meetei Mayek Taksinba Naharol under Akaba in 1977-78 in pursuit of the same demand.
Thereafter in 1979, the State Assembly under the Chief Ministership of Yamgmasho Shaiza passed a resolution to implement Meetei Mayek and a Govt gazette was issued in 1980 but nothing happened.
Again in 1996 a decision to implement the script was taken, said MEELAL in a statement.
As nothing happened, MEELAL took up the agitation from February 10 this year, said the statement adding that numerous agitations have been launched including hunger strike, bandhs, rallies, boycott and even storming the Assembly.
All these measures failed to cut ice with the Govt, said the statement and added that so far numerous vehicles and Govt offices have been torched.
