As in other parts of the world, International Nurses Day was observed in Manipur by various organisations today.
The International Nurses' Day was observed today at the conference of JN Hospital, Porompat under the aegis of the Nurses' Association of Manipur, JN Hospital.
The function was graced by Health and Family Welfare Minister Pheiroijam Parijat, Medical Superintendent of JN Hospital Dr N Rajendra and Dr A Dwijamani of JNIMS as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The observance made under the theme "Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Care Innovation" was opened with lighting of the inaugural lamp in front of the photograph of Florence Nightingale, know as the mother of modern nurse.
The International Nurses Day is being observed in commemoration of the dedication and courage of Florence Nightingale for the cause of humanity on her birthday.
She was born on May 12, 1820 .
Addressing the function, president of the Nurses Association of Manipur L Radharani observed that nurses in Manipur were unable to deliver modern and appropriate health care.
One basic reason for this failure has been lack of refresher courses, workshops etc towards this end.
There has been no initiative from the Government to organise refresher courses for nurses.
Nevertheless, many nurses have been learning about HIV/AIDS on their own.
Radharani also emphasised on the need to create due awareness among the nurses on attending patients suffering from such diseases as TB, malaria, hepatitis-C etc.
In his speech as chief guest of the function, Health and Family Welfare Minister Pheiroijam Parijat hailed the profession of nursing.
He also assured to avail updated knowledge on nursing to the nurses of Manipur from to time.
The International Nurses' Day was also observed at Shija Auditorium, Langol.
The function was jointly organised by the nurses of Shija Hospital and students of Shija Academy of Nursing, conveyed a release.
