Access to juvenile justice stressed

Justice Altamas Kabir urged the legal services authority of the State to stretch out maximum possible assistance to disadvantaged children in order that the children access their legal right.
Supreme Court Judge, Justice Altamas Kabir was speaking as the chief guest of a workshop on the role of legal services authorities in access to justice and juvenile justice held today at the Auditorium of Manipur Film Development Corporation, Palace Gate.
Pointing out that 40 percent of human population is children, he also noted that the number of children who are homeless, adopted, victims of trafficking, labourers at home, hotel and industries has increased.
Justice Kabir further maintained that those underprivileged children were also deprived of their legal rights.
He added that the legal services authority provides free legal service to convicts whose family annual income is below Rs 50,000 .
Justice Kabir also urged the people to take legal assistance from legal services authority�ranging from district level to national level while at the same time exhorting the legal service authorities to provide assistance to underprivileged class.
The programme was also attended by Supreme Court Judge, Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra; Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh, Justice Madan B Lokur, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Justice AK Goel, Justice Manjula Chelur of Kerala High Court, Executive Chairman of Manipur State Legal Services Authority, Justice T Nandakumar Singh besides hosts of advocates.
Two documentary films produced by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority were also screened on the occasion.
A play with the theme of ensuring the educational rights of children was also staged apart from show-casing several cultural extravaganzas including Thang-ta.
The chief guest has also released a newsletter of the MSLSA during the function.
